At just five years old, Ryder Wells has faced challenges that many might not encounter in their lifetime.

In a remarkable story of resilience, this young boy from North Carolina overcame severe injuries sustained during an unfortunate incident involving two large dogs during a family visit in 2015.

Ryder was only 21 months old at the time when the dogs caused significant injuries, including damage to his face, a broken arm, and other complications. Despite the initial uncertainty surrounding his recovery, Ryder’s strength and determination have seen him through approximately 50 reconstructive procedures, demonstrating incredible courage and perseverance.

Despite his remarkable resilience and strength in overcoming significant challenges, young Ryder Wells now faces unkind remarks and stares from others.

According to his teaching assistant, when Ryder began school, even adults would sometimes look at him with curiosity.

His mother, Brittany, shared an emotional account of these experiences. “When we visit the park, some children react out of fear, and one even pointed at him, calling him names before running off,” she told The Mirror newspaper.

“During a recent shopping trip, someone made an unpleasant comment. It’s heartbreaking as a parent to see him face this after all he’s endured—especially when it’s something beyond his control,” she said.

“But he’s such a fighter; he doesn’t let anything stand in his way.”Ryder’s incredible journey has often been described as a “miracle,” as even medical professionals were initially unsure of his chances. His resilience continues to inspire those around him.

His mother, Brittany, now 31 and living in Granite Falls, admits she feels some apprehension as Ryder prepares to start school.

“He wears glasses and a cap, and sometimes he lowers his head to avoid drawing attention,” she shared. “But every day, I remind him that he’s beautiful, that being unique is something to celebrate, and it’s okay to stand out.”

“I do my best to reassure him every day, but I can’t help feeling nervous about him starting school,” Brittany admits. “There will always be a few children who might not understand or be as kind as they could be.”

Brittany hopes to use Ryder’s journey to raise awareness about the impact of bullying on individuals with facial differences. She believes sharing his story can encourage empathy and inspire others to treat everyone with kindness, no matter how they look.

Her goal is to help others see the beauty in uniqueness and think twice about the way they interact with people who may appear different.
