Minecraft shares exciting news for PlayStation 5 players

Minecraft is preparing to launch the original version on PlayStation 5, bringing good news to fans who already own the PlayStation 4 version

Minecraft has launched a preview version of its PlayStation 5 port, for those who own the PlayStation 4 version of the game. Despite being a 13-year-old game, Minecraft remains a much-requested title on PlayStation 5, with fans eager to experience the best performance possible on current-gen consoles. This dream is about to come true, as Minecraft for PS5 is almost here.

After its debut in 2011, Minecraft was swiftly made available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 by 2014. Despite the PlayStation 5 being on the market for over four years, Mojang has faced numerous challenges in releasing the original version for this console. Fortunately, after Minecraft’s significant update in June, the company revealed its plans to finally bring the sandbox game to Sony’s premier console. Initially, the developers are starting with an early access period to collect feedback from players.

On June 20, a preview of Minecraft for PlayStation 5 was released, for those who own the PlayStation 4 version. This news follows rumors from March about the possibility of porting Minecraft to PS5, confirms that Mojang has been working hard on this original version for a while. To download the update, players should navigate to the game settings and choose the “Preview” option. Mojang hasn’t confirmed a global launch date or price for the final version of the port, but it looks like PS5 players can expect to experience a smoother Minecraft in the near future.

What to expect from the PS5 port of Minecraft during the preview period

Minecraft on PS5 will include the latest Tricky Trials update and cross-play support for Realms subscribers. Following significant changes to Minecraft’s Realms earlier this year, Mojang requires a subscription so preview players can join servers with players on other platforms, for as low as $3.99 per month and the highest is $7.99 per month. This controversial move could indicate Mojang’s plans to monetize the PS5 port. Fans have previously requested a free PS5 upgrade for those who already own the game on PS4, but this seems unlikely as some features are already behind paywalls.

Regarding preview performance, Mojang’s goal is to detect bugs and enhance the game’s optimization for PlayStation 5. Players may encounter minor performance issues during the testing phase. Furthermore, because the port is in beta, the in-game store will be inaccessible on PS5. On a positive note, the preview will offer native 4K support right from the beginning.
